Correspondence, poems, and biographical information; letters re family activities, politics, local news, and social events in Charleston during 19th century; undated letter, to Messrs. Hilliard & Gray re "the little paper which I have commenced editing"; undated letter to [George] Story [Fay], re "publishing my prose works uniformly"; letter, 15 Apr. 1850 (Charleston, S.C.), to James S. Whitney, describing a valued friend: "T. Th. Tefft... is cashier of a Bank... in Savannah, Ga."; letter, 19 Feb. 1859 (Charleston, S.C.), complying with request for her autograph. Letter, 17 Sept. 1863 (Greenville, S.C.), to "Eliza," re aging, recent books read, the Civil War, and European reaction: quoting Goldsmith re "rocking the cradle of delining age" and remarking "it would have been... poetical justice if my quartette of daughters could have each presided over one" of the four feet of the cradle, explaining how all her needs are met by Frank and other gifts: "Laura's English flanned... Caroline's Nassau Cologne... keep[s] me odorous, & my caps still elicit... admiration.... so you must think of me as a nicely dressed old lady," her interest in reading "Prescott's Peru.... You will think these reflections strangely quiet while the Abolition Force is driving at our city," commenting on Europe's reaction "that the demolition of... [an] impregnable Fortress is... play work, while a sand battery held... for forty days, against... a powerful assailant," relating military achievements of "Lieut. Alonzo W.," remarking "We receive no letters from any of you," trusting that P.D. has received "all the despatches of 'the Seige'... for his war-book [sent] by various opportunities," and other family news. Letter, 20 Jan. 1875, to a niece, re invitation to a dance and Gilman's description of her first ball in Savannah, Ga., in 1811; brief note, 25 May [1800s], from Gilman in Charleston, S.C., to Dennis R[obinson] Alward, forwarding at his request, autographs of Miss Martineau [Harriet Martineau (1802-1876)?] and one of Claude, son of Mrs. Hemans [Felicia Dorothea Browne Hemans (1793-1835)]; neither autograph present. [Alward authored the book, "Autograph Letters, Interesting Manuscripts and Historical Documents..." (ca. 1890s)]. Published items include quotes taken from letters of early 1860s, published 21 July 1901, describing conditions on Sullivan's Island, S.C., during early days of Civil War; and description of scenes along Charleston's Meeting Street during the 1830s (originally published in Southern Rose, 1838; reprinted 3 Aug. 1924); also including biographical sketch and copies of printed poems.
